Top of The Pile: Animal Prints
Do you hear the call of the wild? Animal prints, patterned fabrics, and wild graphic designs have been around for ages, but these ferocious styles didn’t enter mainstream consumer culture until the 1960s and 70s. After having a grand entrance to high fashion in the roaring 30s, what was once worn by the wealthy elite became a highly sought-after style by the general public. And then the hunt was on - from scarves to t-shirts to giant furry hooded winter coats with ears. The world loves animals and yes, it seems we want to look like them, too.
Fashion trends and clothing styles evolved over millennia. Cavemen wore their hunted animal skins and furs to pull the power of the beast and aid their hunt. Kings and castles had animal skin rugs to show their status as social elites. In the 1940s, pinup model Bettie Page rocked a leopard mini dress and the crowds went wild. Parisian women donned delicate couture scarves with exotic prints. Hippies rocked furry boots and outfits that were...out there.
Fast forward to the 80s and 90s, animal prints took on a new face. The sweet features of the Panda bear represented the world's wildlife endangerment and efforts to prevent extinction. Save the whales tshirts were everywhere. Dolphins caughts in tuna nets enraged the public and we collectively wanted to protect our oceans. We began to see Greenpeace and Love your Mother bumper stickers everywhere. Mainstream culture really began to see the human impact on Planet Earth and the animal kingdom. This cultural consciousness trickles down into government policy like the EPA, entertainment like science shows and animal programming, and of course… mainstream fashion.
